Abstract

We have developed a shock wave forceps for drug delivery and gene transfection. The shock wave is generated by electrical discharge from a shock wave generator and reflected by a spheroid-shaped reflector. The outer diameter of the reflector is 11 mm. The device enables a precision shock wave exposure to the target tissue in the body. We evaluated this device with visualization of shock wave and measurement of shock wave pressure. The visualization experiment demonstrated that the shock wave converged at second focal point. The wave pressure measurement results showed that the device has an average pressure of 2.13 MPa. We conducted an in vitro experiment with the cultured cell to evaluate the feasibility of the device. The experimental results showed that the cells were stained by PI locally after received shock wave exposure. The stained region was about 1.5 mm diameter. The validation experiment showed the possibility of the developed to be used in drug delivery and gene transfection.
