Book cover Clinical Management of Urolithiasis

Abstract

Up to 10% of the population is affected by nephrolithiasis, and one unique population that is not spared is the pregnant female. Because of the inherent risk of a stone event during pregnancy, special attention is required. Herein, we review the scope of stone disease in pregnancy. We describe the pathophysiological and anatomical changes that occur during pregnancy that alter the risk factors for stone formation. We also review the complications associated with a stone event during pregnancy, the presentation of the patient, and the complexity of its diagnosis. Lastly, a management algorithm is proposed.
