Telemedicine for Retinopathy of Prematurity Diagnosis

Abstract

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vasoproliferative retinal disease that affects low-birth-weight infants. It is a leading cause of childhood blindness throughout the world. Although binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy is considered the gold standard for ROP diagnosis, store-and-forward telemedicine has become increasingly important for providing patients with access to experienced providers, detecting serious disease with high accuracy, and potentially improving the cost-effectiveness of disease management. This chapter reviews the topic of telemedicine for ROP diagnosis including potential benefits, studies involving diagnostic accuracy and reliability, examples of operational systems, and potential barriers to implementation.
