Abstract

In the preceding chapter, we discussed the interaction of broadband radiation with an ensemble of two-level atomic systems. Here, we treat the interaction of monochromatic radiation with an ensemble of two-level atomic systems. We will show that the photon density in a disk of light traveling in an active medium increases exponentially with the traveling path length. The gain coefficient of an active medium is proportional to the Einstein coefficient of stimulated emission and to the population difference. We express the gain coefficient as the product of the gain cross section of a two-level atomic system and the population difference.
