Femoroacetabular Impingement

Abstract

Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) was first described in the late 1990s by Rheinhold Ganz [2, 3, 12, 19] in Bern, Switzerland, as abnormal contact between the anterior acetabular rim and the femoral neck. It has been described as a common cause of hip pain in young adults and has been proposed as a cause of osteoarthritis. In 2001, Ganz also described a safe technique [11] to dislocate the hip joint to modify the shape of the femoral head at the head–neck junction and to correct the abnormalities on the acetabular side (lesions of the labrum, overcoverage of the anterior acetabular rim and cartilage damage) [8].
