Zusammenfassung
Bisher haben wir meistens die Bewegung von Punktmassen betrachtet. Diese stellen zwar, wie etwa in der Himmelsmechanik, eine gute Idealisierung mancher Naturvorgänge dar. Hüfig haben wir es aber mit ausgedehnten Körpern zu tun. Manchmal, wie etwa bei Flüssigkeiten, sind diese nur mit den Mitteln der Kontinuumsmechanik, also mit partiellen statt gewöhnlichen Differentialgleichungen zu beschreiben. Bei starren Körpern allerdings bleiben die Abstände zwischen den punktförmig gedachten Atomen zeitlich konstant, was uns eine Beschreibung durch gewöhnliche Differentialgleichungen ermöglicht.
