Abstract
This report summarizes the discussions held in Stuttgart during a two-day workshop (September 30 to October 1, 2010, in Stuttgart, Germany) on “Controversies around Treatment of the Patent Ductus Arteriosus” sponsored by Orphan Europe. The aim of the meeting was to discuss the different approaches taken in the management of PDA. Internationally-renowned speakers and attending participants exchanged experiences and views about when and whether to treat or not to treat patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), which rationale to follow in selecting appropriate treatment, and how the results of various studies on different drugs and dosages are shaping the guidelines for the future management of PDA. The focus was also directed to other important aspects relating to this group of patients, such as the role of echocardiography and Doppler imaging.
