Abstract

Many organisms need external shell or similar things for mechanical protection and strength. Examples include shells of clams and oysters, eggshells of chicken, corrals, extra skeleton of insects such as beetles, and bark of trees. Organisms also need scaffold to maintain their statures. This is “bone” and similar tissues. We will talk about “bone” in another chapter.
