Abstract
Metabolism is defined as the sum total of all reactions that occur in the cell. It consists of two phases: catabolism and anabolism. Catabolism is the degradation of complex molecules to simpler ones with the liberation of Gibbs free energy, i.e., catabolic reactions are exergonic. Anabolism is the antithesis of catabolism, i.e., the synthesis of complex molecules from simpler ones with the utilization of Gibbs free energy, i.e., anabolic reactions are endergonic.
