Abstract

In this chapter we investigate shafts that are twisted by external torques. As in the previous chapters, we calculate the deformations and stresses that are caused by the loading. For simplicity, we restrict ourselves to shafts with circular cross sections and to thin-walled shafts. By reading this chapter students will become familiar with the basic equations of torsion. They will also learn how to apply the theory to solve statically determinate and indeterminate problems.
