Abstract
In the UK approximately 3,000 and in the USA approximately 45,000 corneal transplants are carried out each year. The main indications for corneal transplantation are listed in Table 3.1. The most common indications are corneal ectasia, corneal dystrophy, corneal scarring and vascularisation, corneal decompensation and corneal perforation.
Evolution of surgical techniques over the last two decades has allowed a shift from penetrating keratoplasty being the procedure of choice in all cases to lamellar keratoplasty for selective replacement of the diseased tissue with preservation of healthy host tissue where possible. This improves structural integrity and potentially reduces the risks of rejection.
