Abstract

In the paper a design of ultrasonic air temperature meter is presented. The instrument is suitable for non-contact measurement of air temperature inside a confined space (room, boiler, tank). The temperature of air is derived from changes in sound velocity in the space between transmitter and receiver. Changes in the speed of sound are detected by phase shift variations of a 40 kHz pulsed ultrasonic wave (binary frequency shift keyed signals). The instrument uses modern RISC microcontroller, no expensive FPGA circuits are necessary. Such an approach results in a very compact construction of the meter and its fast operation (response time below 500 ms).
