Abstract
Emission tomography as a medical imaging technique detects the radiation emitted by radioisotopes injected into the body to provide measurements of regional tissue function in vivo. In single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) photons emitted from the radiotracer in the body are detected by the system as independent events. In positron emission tomography (PET), the two photons from the annihilation of positrons originally emitted from the radiotracer are the basis of image formation as these are detected by the system in coincidence.
