Im Rahmen der Optimierung werden größte bzw. kleinste Werte einer Funktion f auf ihrem Definitionsbereich gesucht, d.h. es gilt ein Problem der Art Maximiere (Minimiere) f(x) für x ∈ \(\mathbb{D} \) zu lösen. Optimierungsprobleme treten in vielen Bereichen der Statistik und Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung auf.
