Abstract
Acute otitis media is inflammation of the middle ear cavity and may present in different forms. The middle ear is considered sterile. Obstruction of the eustachian tube is an important contributive factor for acute otitis media. Upper respiratory tract infections may easily spread to the middle ear cavity and nasal obstruction makes this process easier. The majority of acute infections of the middle ear are viral. Symptoms are pain, fever, and conductive-type hearing loss. If the tympanic membrane is bulging, myringotomy may be necessary.
