Abstract

Up until the beginning of the 1990s, Asia-Pacific was a largely untapped market for SAP. Though the first subsidiaries in Singapore (1989) and Hong Kong (1992) were already in operation, their presence was more a function of demand than a real strategic push into this region. Australia and New Zealand were at insignificant levels of revenue until 1993. Only when Les Hayman was hired by Klaus Besier in 1994 to run Australia / New Zealand, and Sam Nakane by Hasso Plattner to run Japan, was there a significant change: Both markets started to boom, with Australia becoming the third largest market for SAP after Germany and the U.S.
