Seit den ersten Anfängen der direkten Hörnervstimulation zur Reaktivierung des Hörens bei Taubheit im Jahre 1950 (CIark 2003) blicken wir heute auf weltweit über 140.000 Menschen, die mit einem CI versorgt wurde. In Deutschland kommt man nach einer Schätzung auf der Basis von Herstellerangaben zum Stichtag 01.11.2007 auf etwa 16.000 CI-Träger. Davon wurden etwa 1200 Patienten, also ca. 7%, auf beiden Ohren (bilateral) versorgt. Aus der Patientenstatistik des Bayerischen Cochlear Centrums an der Universitäts-HNO-Klinik in Regensburg lässt sich exemplarisch die Geschichte der bilateralen (beidseitigen) Implantation im Zusammenhang mit Meilensteinen der technischen Entwicklung der CI-Systeme (Implantat und Sprachprozessor) darstellen. Den entscheidenden Anstoß zum Start eines klinischen Programms zur bilateralen Implantation gab die Einführung kleiner Hinter-dem-Ohr-(HdO-)Sprachprozessoren.
