Accelerated partial breast irradiation is an attractive and convenient alternative to whole breast irradiation for patients desiring breast conservation. Although the longest follow-up exists for brachytherapy, delivery of this treatment with external-beam radiation provides a less invasive option that is more appealing to many patients and physicians. Advances in radiology and three-dimensional imaging allow for accurate definition of the lumpectomy cavity, and improvements in position verification assist in providing precise patient set-up. A combination of photons and electrons provides a relatively homogeneous plan and an attractive treatment planning option for external-beam accelerated partial breast irradiation.
