Abstract
Great changes have occurred in the approach to imaging the biliary tree and the pancreatic ducts. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) has now emerged as a noninvasive diagnostic technique that can replace diagnostic endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in many indications. Continued technical improvements and the use of hormonal stimulation of the exocrine pancreas with secretin allowed to achieve a more accurate display of the anatomy of the ducts and to expand the clinical applications of MRCP opening new areas for clinical research.
In this chapter, we describe and illustrate the technical issues of secretin-enhanced MRCP, we review the different patterns of ductal involvement in inflammatory and malignant pancreatic diseases, and discuss the rationale for MRCP.
