Abstract
In the past twenty years, cleanliness of steel products has been significantly increased, by which properties of steel products have been largely improved. Among the extra fine grain high strength steels, the HSLA steel grades for hot rolled heavy plates request extra low sulfur and the high strength alloying special steel grades for gears, springs, shafts, etc. demand extra low oxygen and non-metallic inclusions control. In this chapter, technologies for producing extra low sulfur heavy plate grades are introduced, including hot metal desulfurization pretreatment, measures against S (Sulphur) element content increase during BOF (basic oxygen furnace) steelmaking, extra low S secondary refining, etc. For extra low oxygen special steels, technologies of deoxidation of liquid steel, high basicity slag secondary reefing, non-metallic inclusion control, etc. are introduced.
