The need has been identified for the transmission of SCN signalling messages from a signalling gateway (SG) to a media gateway controller (MGC) or an IP signalling point (IPSP), e.g., an IP-resident database, and between IPSPs. Within the SG, MTP-3, and SCCP functionality may be present or not. There are several applications foreseen for the use of SS 7 over IP: the realization of IP-based high-speed links, the migration of a PSTN network towards an IP-based network or the convergence of signalling and data networks, e.g., to improve the Internet access via PSTNs (see Chap. 14). For their realization, different protocol architectures are defined by SIGTRAN using different SCN adaptation modules, which are described below.
