Abstract
Oriented Riemannian geometry in four dimensions has some special features most of which may be derived from the action of the Hodge *-operator. Using it one may split 2-forms into self-dual and anti-self-dual forms. This can be applied in particular to the middle cohomology of a compact four-manifold or to the curvature form of any bundle with connection over an oriented four-manifold.
