Das Fibromyalgiesyndrom (FMS) ist eine chronische Erkrankung, die definitionsgemäß durch das Auftreten generalisierter Schmerzen am Bewegungsapparat und das Vorhandensein von schmerzhaften Druckpunkten an Sehnenansätzen, den sog. „tender points“, gekennzeichnet ist. Daneben treten häufig vegetative Symptome im kardiovaskulären und gastrointestinalen Bereich, neurologische Symptome, Schlafstörungen und affektive Störungen (Depression, Angst) auf. So ergibt sich klinisch ein buntes Bild der Erkrankung, die Symptomatik verschiedener Patienten kann an Intensität und Bandbreite stark variieren. Dies führt nicht selten dazu, dass die Interaktion zwischen Arzt und Patient erschwert ist: Der Arzt fühlt sich durch multiple, vage und nur schwer zu beeinflussende Beschwerden, die scheinbar nicht zusammenpassen, unter Druck gesetzt.
