Abstract
The notion that human papillomavirus (HPV) plays an important role in the etiology of cervical cancer and the sexual transmission of HPV has led to further assessment of the role of HPV in the etiology of squamous cell carcinoma of the penis. While risk factors for penile cancer, such as number of sex partners and a history of genital warts or other sexually transmitted diseases, have been known for a long time, it is becoming clear that some of these risk factors can be related to the presence of HPV (Daling et al., 2005; Bleeker et al., 2008). Several studies have shown that an infection with high-risk HPV, mainly type 16, is causally involved in the pathogenesis of penile carcinoma (Rubin et al., 2001; McCance et al., 1986; Heideman et al., 2007; Gregoire et al., 1995). The published overall prevalence of high-risk HPV DNA in penile carcinomas ranges from 30 to 100%, depending on methods of HPV detection, geographical variance, and subtype (Rubin et al., 2001; McCance et al., 1986; Maden et al., 1993). An association of a small subset of penile cancers with low-risk HPV types has also been suggested, and DNA of cutaneous HPV 8 has occasionally been detected in penile lesions (Heideman et al., 2007; Dorfman et al., 2006; Senba et al., 2006; Wieland et al., 2000).
