Zusammenfassung
Einschneidende Veränderungen des globalen Klimas sind schon heute in Gange und werden in Zukunft noch an Bedeutung gewinnen. An fast allen Orten wird es wärmer, der Meeresspiegel steigt, Regenmengen verändern sich, extreme Wetterereignisse wie Starkniederschläge werden sich in ihrer Häufigkeit und Intensität in der Zukunft verändern. „Diese Veränderungen sind verursacht v. a. durch die Freisetzung von Treibhausgasen“ (von Storch 2009a: 306). Der Mensch wirkt also auf das globale Klima. Auch wenn in den kommenden Dekaden Maßnahmen zur CO2-Reduktion erfolgreich sein sollten und sich die Politik auf globale Strategien verständigen würde, wird sich der Klimawandel aufgrund der bereits vorhandenen Emissionsmengen in der Atmosphäre fortsetzen und die Lebensbedingungen moderner Gesellschaften in den kommenden Jahrzehnten weiter beeinflussen (vgl. Grothmann & Patt 2005; Parry u. a. 2009). Es gibt sogar Anzeichen dafür, dass die globalen Emissionen in den kommenden Jahren noch signifikant steigen werden (vgl. Sheehan 2008), und dass die in transnationalen Abkommen gesetzten Reduktionsziele nicht erreicht werden, um die potentiellen Auswirkungen des Klimawandels zumindest zu verlangsamen (vgl. Prins & Rayner 2007a).
