Wie nur wenige Trends zuvor in Deutschland hat „Social Entrepreneurship“ [ebenso wie Sozialunternehmertum und Sozialunternehmen im Sinne von social entrepreneurship organization im Folgenden überwiegend mit dem Kürzel SEO bezeichnet] innerhalb weniger Jahre eine erstaunliche Karriere erlebt. Die aktuelle Konjunktur ist umso erstaunlicher, als das Konzept nicht nur mit einem im Deutschen sperrigen Namen antritt, sondern auch sonst nur schwer in die Erwartungen und Aufgabenteilungen passt, die sich hierzulande etabliert haben.
