Auszug
Ein besseres Verständnis der kausalen Beziehung sowie der Wechselwirkung zwischen sozio-ökonomischen Variablen und verschiedenen Dimensionen von Gesundheit ist ein immer wichtiger werdendes Anliegen sozialwissenschaftlicher Forschung, da nahezu alle ökonomischen und gesellschaftlich relevanten menschlichen Verhaltensweisen vom Gesundheitszustand der Akteure abhängen (z.B. Wendt & Wolf 2006). Die empirische Untersuchung dieser Zusammenhänge wird jedoch häufig durch das Fehlen adäquater Mikrodatensätze erschwert: medizinische Surveys sind oft nicht verallgemeinerbar für die Gesamtbevölkerung und/oder enthalten nur wenige Informationen zum sozio-ökonomischen Hintergrund der Befragten, während allgemeine sozialwissenschaftliche Bevölkerungsumfragen oft nur eine Frage nach der Selbsteinschätzung der Gesundheit auf einer Skala von ,sehr gut’ bis ,sehr schlecht’ beinhalten. Trotz ihres unbestrittenen Wertes (z.B. Idler & Benyamini 1997) haben sich solche subjektiven Gesundheitsindikatoren insbesondere dann als problematisch erwiesen, wenn verschiedene Subpopulationen innerhalb eines Landes oder mehrere Länder miteinander verglichen werden sollen und das Antwortverhalten nicht einheitlich ist (z.B. Jürges 2007,2008).
Bei dem vorliegenden Kapitel handelt es sich um die leicht überarbeitete Fassung eines Artikels, der zuerst als Originalbeitrag in der Zeitschrift für Gerontologie und Geriatrie (Jahrgang 41; 2008) erschienen ist.
