UCAS is the organisation responsible for managing applications to higher education courses in the UK. The UCAS tariff is the system for allocating points to qualifications used for entry to higher education. It allows students to use a range of different qualifications to help secure a place on an undergraduate course. For instance, the highest grade (A*) in an A level counts for 140 UCAS tariff points (see http://www.ucas.com/students/ucas_tariff/tarifftables/).

For details on the sampling of subjects and institutions see Ertl and Dunbar-Goddet (2007).
