Zusammenfassung
Die Fruchtbarkeit der Meere gründet sich auf die im Meerwasser gelösten Mengen an Phosphat und Nitrat; dagegen sind die Flußeinträge verschwindend gering. Die Weltozeane enthalten (nach Emery et al., 1955) gelöst in ihren Wassermassen (1,35 × 1018m3) etwa 120 × 109t Phosphat-Phosphor und 920 × 109t gelösten anorganischen Stickstoff (Nitrat und Ammonium). Der jährliche Eintrag an Stickstoff in die Weltmeere wird dagegen auf 14−15 × 106t natürliche Flußfrachten plus 7−35 × 106t aus anthropogenen Quellen geschätzt. Etwa ebensogroß ist der Eintrag über die Atmosphäre (49 × 106t pro Jahr), wovon etwa die Hälfte aus anthropogenen Quellen stammt (GESAMP, 1988). Insgesamt knapp 100 × 106t Stickstoff-Eintrag jährlich in die Weltmeere sind aber gering gegenüber der 10000fach höheren Menge des gelösten anorganischen Stickstoffs in den ozeanischen Wassermassen.
