Abstract

Substance misuse and substance use disorders represent one of the most prominent threats to adolescent health and well-being, with potential physical, emotional and psychological adverse effects stemming from both experimental and regular substance use. As part of routine, comprehensive pediatric care all adolescents should receive preventative guidance, regular screening and evaluation of any substance use, with referral for additional treatment when appropriate. The following chapter provides guidance for pediatricians in their care of adolescents at any level of substance use.
