Abstract
The treatment of headaches in children and adolescents is a combination of art and science. Treatment requires taking into consideration both the diagnosis and the temperament of the family and the personality of the child. A model or overall paradigm for treatment of headaches and children in adolescence is outlined.
Sections on stress, patient education, lifestyle, sleep, and diet all precede the use of medications. Pediatric rescue or acute medications are described, followed by sections on preventive medications. These sections include how and when to intervene, optimizing prophylaxis choice by consideration of comorbidities and alternative prevention approaches.
Appropriate use of multidisciplinary care is discussed. This chapter concludes with special circumstances in pediatric treatment, including acute pediatric headache, acute urgent treatment, migraine with neurologic features, menstrual migraine, cyclical vomiting, chronic daily headache, posttraumatic headache, new daily persistent headache, exertional headache, and pediatric trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias.
