Abstract

Orofacial clefts are mainly made up of cleft palate (n=811) and cleft lip/palate (n=1394). A suggested risk increase with maternal age was seen, notably for cleft palate. A moderately increased risk was seen after maternal smoking and a clear-cut association with maternal overweight or obesity. Infants of mothers born outside Sweden had a deceased risk for cleft lip/palate. A risk increase of cleft lip/palate after maternal use of systemic glucocorticosteroids or NSAID was seen while maternal use of anticonvulsants or antiasthmatics was associated with an increased risk of cleft palate. A ”protective” effect of antihistamines used for nausea and vomiting in pregnancy was oberved.
