Abstract
The urban life of Paris dramatically changed with the introduction of the passage. Far from simple shopping arcades, the Parisian passage created an icon for the city and a destination for the flaneur to enjoy abandon and luxury in a disorienting, new urban landscape — one filled with unprecedented moods of light and the temptation to look at the diversity of things and observe others doing the same. Attitudes fostered by the original arcades are still central cultural values associated with the sensual experience of urban life in Paris. Such sensual experience has been partially threatened and undermined by the subsequent transformation of passages into straightforward shopping malls.
