Abstract

As a new decade begins, Europe stands at a turning point in its history: after September 11, after Iraq and Afghanistan, the growing awareness of globalisation — through the shock of the 2008 financial crisis — has acted as a catalyst. This economic and financial crisis, unprecedented since that of 1929, has reminded European countries that none of them, not even the largest, can hope to deal with such turmoil alone. If they are not united, they could slowly perish from the singular problem of marginalisation by the enormous emerging geopolitical entities.
