Abstrait
En 1938, Dodds fait la synthèse d’un œstrogène non stéroïdien actif per os, le diéthylstilbestrol (DES). Cet oestrogène de synthèse est alors commercialisé en 1946 sous le nom de Distilbène® et de stilbestrol-borne. Il est tout d’abord utilisé dans les grossesses menacées : antécédent d’avortement spontané, hémorragies gravidiques tout particulièrement au cours du 1er trimestre. Ultérieurement il sera proposé et utilisé chez les patientes diabétiques insulinodépendantes, les toxémies gravidiques et même dans le traitement des stérilités.
