Abstract

Prior to 1990, RBC transfusions were very frequently used in chronic hemodialysis patients. The advent of erythropoietin therapy led to a dramatic reduction in the incidence of transfusions: the Annual Report of the US Renal Data System in 2009 indicated a halving of blood transfusions from approximately 14 % to approximately 7 % over the first decade of ESA use.
