Abstract
Since the publication of the landmark meta-analysis from the Oxford group in 19881 it has been known that the use of subcutaneous heparin reduces the rate of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in surgical patients. It is generally accepted that DVT and PE have a common cause with an event ratio of about 10:1. For the purpose of an evidence base from which to make recommendations for prophylaxis, DVT and PE are considered together as venous thrombo-embolism (VTE). A strategy which results in a demonstrable reduction in the incidence of DVT can be expected to reduce PE and fatal PE commensurately.
