Abstract
Film-maker Lesmoir-Gordon offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes account of how a modern cult classic came into being. The task of moving from a ‘Eureka!’ moment of understanding the Mandelbrot Sets for the first time to making a compelling and saleable film about them was beset by challenges, on technical, logistical and financial levels, but was also helped by many strokes of good fortune. The sustaining vision, in the director’s own words, was to ‘set out to make, not a deeply mathematical, analytical piece, but rather a celebration of a remarkable discovery. I wanted it to be fun. I knew it had to entertain at some level if it was going to reach a really wide audience.’ This chapter is followed by a transcript of the final script of The Colours of Infinity.
