Abstract

Sonographically visible thyroid nodules are present in up to 40% of the general population. Palpable thyroid nodules and thyroid nodules discovered incidentally on imaging studies have a similar (∼10%) risk of malignancy. Patients with multiple nodules have a cumulative thyroid cancer risk of ∼10%. Nodule multiplicity does not reduce the overall risk of thyroid cancer. One-third of cancers in a multinodular thyroid will be in a non-dominant nodule.
