Abstract
Embolization, the deliberate therapeutic occlusion of vessels, is normally undertaken using mechanical occlusion devices like coils, plugs, particles, or liquids such as glues. An alternative approach is sclerosant therapy; this can be accomplished using liquid agents such as alcohol or sodium tetradecyl sulphate or by temperature change. Thermal ablation is most commonly used in the treatment of varicose veins (see Chapter 45).
