Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a common pathologic finding. Approximately 20% of the population of 50-year-olds, with an increasing percentage in older people, experience LVH. It represents an independent predictor of premature death, which is about as clinically important as frequent ventricular premature beats. The enhanced risk is attributed to consecutive malignant ventricular arrhythmias and to heart failure. It is possible to prevent or reduce LVH with drugs such as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, thus eliminating or diminishing the fatal consequences. Therefore, the reliable diagnosis of LVH has gained increased interest during the last two decades.
