Abstract

The selection of a pessary to treat pelvic prolapse has traditionally been based on the practitioners clinical experience and the received wisdom of mentors. Guidelines from manufacturers are not based on scientific evidence but rather on the recommendations of the inventors and those of recognized authorities. Clinical research has provided some guidance. This chapter discusses the following issues:

  1. 1.

The use of clinical evidence along with pragmatic considerations to provide a new and more effective rationale for pessary selection

  2. 2.

The features of the most commonly used pessaries, and the impact these features have on pessary selection
