Abstract

In recent years, there is accumulating evidence for the role of various external environmental factors in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The main environmental factors that were found to be associated with SLE include chemicals, such as silica, mercury, phthalate, trichloroethylene, and pesticides; cigarette smoking, infectious agents, drugs, vaccines, and ultraviolet radiation. In this chapter we review these associations and the possible mechanisms underlying the immune dysregulation they trigger.
