Abstract
Obstructive lung diseases represent a growing burden to society. Chest radiography and computed tomography (CT) have historically been the main imaging resources used to evaluate these disorders. While much information can be learned from conventional studies, more advanced imaging modalities like high resolution CT, synchrotron radiation CT, hyperpolarized helium-3 magnetic resonance imaging, and optical coherence tomography allow greater structural and functional characterization of the lungs and airways. Improvements in these technologies will allow patients to be classified according to disease phenotype, and potentially benefit from more specific treatment of their disease.
