Abstract
Stem cell research is advancing at an incredible pace, with new discoveries and clinical applications being reported from all over the world. Stem cells are functionally defined by their ability to self-renew and to differentiate into the cell lineages of their tissue of origin. Stem cells are self-sustaining and can replicate themselves for long periods of time. These characteristics make them very promising for treating debilitating disorders such as heart diseases, liver diseases, stroke, spinal injuries, Parkinson disease, Alzheimer disease, retinal degeneration, muscular dystrophy, diabetes mellitus, and so on. Stem cell therapy has generated interest in clinicians and the public. Clinical applications have been reported in heart diseases, spinal cord injury, ischemic limbs, retinal degeneration, and liver diseases. This chapter summarizes recent developments concerning gastrointestinal stem cells.
