Abstract

Computerized order entry (COE) provides an opportunity to reduce a variety of prescribing errors. The improved legibility, reduction in transcription errors, real-time drug–drug interaction evaluation, and improved mechanisms for reconciliation of medications with proper patient identification make a strong argument for the adoption of such systems. There are some other considerations, however, which may detract from the overall positive image of electronic prescribing. This chapter provides perspective on the advantages and disadvantages that present with COE.
