Part of the book series: Current Clinical Pathology ((CCPATH))

Abstract

Invasive ductal carcinoma (cancer) refers to a malignant epithelial proliferation which stems from the terminal duct-lobular unit. These tumors are so-named because of the resemblance of the tumor cells to the cells normally lining the ducts as opposed to the lobules. These invasive epithelial tumor cells are no longer surrounded by a myoepithelial or basal cell layer as in the normal duct, and the basement membrane is lost as well. The series of complex interactions between the epithelial cells and the basement membrane and surrounding stroma which allows them to develop this capacity to invade are beyond the scope of this book, but suffice it to say that the interactions are among the most elusive and studied relationships in all of cancer biology.
