Abstract
As Max Weber (1978) described some time ago, the modern world has become almost thoroughly rationalized. His point is that due to the dominance of science and mathematics, social life has been transformed into a monotonous routine. In this regard, workplaces, schools, and other organizations are standardized, regulated, and thus very predictable. The spread of bureaucracy exemplifies this trend (Weber, Economy and Society, pp. 954–1006, 1978). While the operation of these institutions is certainly refined, with the production of many goods and services, something seems to be wrong.
