Abstract
Psychopharmacological treatment of PTSD often occurs in conjunction with psychotherapeutic approaches. In his review, van der Kolk (1988) found that there have been clinical reports claiming success for every class of psychoactive medication for specific features of PTSD, including monamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI), benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, lithium carbonate, beta-adrenergic blockers, and clonidine. Nevertheless, there have yet to be any controlled studies on any of these compounds (Friedman, 1988; van der Kolk, 1988). At the present time, psychopharmacological treatment of PTSD alone is never sufficient to alleviate the suffering associated with the disorder (Friedman, 1988).
