On Predicting the Response of Auditory Nerve Fibers to Complex Tones

Abstract

The response to sound of the mechanical and neural elements of the peripheral auditory system is decidedly nonlinear. In recent years quantitative studies of auditory responses to complex or multicomponent tones have been performed with the result being that the effects of the various nonlinearities, if not their causes, are known in reasonable detail. However, despite the sizeable amount of work, the way tones combine to produce responses in auditory nerve fibers has remained unclear.
